Electric cars not only reduce your carbon footprint, but also are more cost-effective, proving to be a smart purchase.

An analysis done by the International Council for Clean Transportation (ICCT) compares a typical european internal combustion engine car, the hybrid car with the best fuel economy (2019 Toyota Prius Echo), and a electric car (Nissan Leaf). The results indicate that the electric car is far more fuel efficient than both the standard car and the hybrid. Additionally, a University of Michigan study found that on average, an electric vehicle is 50% more cost effective than a gas powered car.

However, actual consumer behavior shows that people don't want to buy an electric car, and this can be attributed to the lack of intrest. Electric cars don't have the prestige that comes with good old fashioned, gas-powered cars or expensive sports cars. Electric cars are a smart purchase both for your pocket and for the planet, and there needs to be an effort made to showcase their practicality and supremacy, to finally get the attention and buyers they deserve.

It is definitely a step forward in terms of stopping use of fossil fuels and combating pollution. But electric cars will bring their own set of problems, which are hard to foresee right now. The problem with cars is not that they pollute per se, but because there are so many of them. Aircraft carriers are the biggest fuel-guzzlers on this planet, but that is not really a cause for concern because there are so few of them. Had the number of cars been limited then nobody would be worried about the impact on the environment they cause. Once electric cars are produced in millions they will cause problems too. Perhaps the long term solution is to not have private transport but only have super-efficient public transport , though that seems like a Utopian dream.
