Destroying parts of our past will not make what happened in the past any better.
The philosophy remains the same
Yes, History is Objective
Removing statues will not stop reminding us of the confederacy.
Taking down statues does not change history
History should be objective
They should be taken down
Confederate statues should not be taken down because then we are actively destroying our history.
When we destroy our history, it shows that we cannot realize the mistakes we have made as a country. We should remember things that we have gone through and make sure not to make the same mistakes.
In ancient times, the symbols of a generation were its buildings, statues, paintings and books. When another generated wanted a change, they destroyed all the above objects and put up their own.
Today, the symbols are mostly digital. We believe in taking down social media posts and websites and any digital evidence of something which we dont believe in anymore.
This is cultural evolution. It is always a cycle- a wave starts, rises up, reaches its peak and then dies down to be replaced by another wave.
Yes I agree history should be objective, which is exactly why Confederate statues and all other memorabilia should be taken down and placed in a museum. There are better ways of actively recognizing our history than "honoring" those who have tried to subvert the very ideals of this nation. Does one see statues of Nazi leaders when visiting Germany? Statues should be erected of people that have contributed to the greatness of this nation, not those who waged war against and sought to destroy it. Confederate memorabilia and statues should be displayed in a museum so people can reflect upon the past of the country in an objective manner.
We hear about the confederacy everywhere and I do not think that removing these statues will make us not remember that time of oppression and hate.
If we do a biased judgement of the entire history of mankind then there wont be any history left because everybody will find something to take down based on their sense of values and justice.
History is only complete when you mix the good parts with the bad part. Confederacy may have been bad but it is still a part of American history and it would be foolish to omit it just because a certain section of people find it offensive.
Learning only happens when you analyse both good and bad. History should be objective, not selective
They should be taken down because they remind us of a time where there was a lot of oppression and hate. These statues also indirectly hint that this was a good thing. However, this is not the case
No, they should not because then actively destroying our history.
